本周我们来学习与助人相关的词汇。

1.virtue /'vɜːtjuː/

n. 美德;德行；

e.g. In my country, people tend to view helping others as a virtue.

e.g. Humility/Patience/Tenacity is considered a virtue.

b. 优点

syn. benefit; advantage; merit

常见搭配：have the virtue of … 有…优点

e.g. One of the virtues of this job is the flexible hours.

e.g. This delicious recipe has virtue of being extremely simple to make.

2. compassion /kəmˈpæʃ(ə)n/

n. 同情；怜悯

常见搭配：feel/show compassion for 表示同情

e.g. She showed great compassion for young people from deprived backgrounds.

e.g. The victims should be treated with compassion.

adj. compassionate 有同情心的;表示同情的；

本季口语话题：describe a person who often helps others.

e.g. Lucas is one of most compassionate and loving person I have met. He is always ready to lend a helping hand to those most in need.

3. obligation /ɒblɪ'geɪʃ(ə)n/

n. 义务;责任

搭配：the sense of obligation 责任感；使命感。

e.g. Some people help others out of a sense of obligation, and a desire to please or gain acceptance.

备注：please v. 取悦

Feel obligated to 有义务做某事

e.g. People like to help others because they were once helped by somebody in their past so they feel obligated to return favors.

备注：return favors 报答他人

4. charitable /'tʃærɪtəb(ə)l/

adj. (组织或活动)慈善的

e.g. One way to help others is performing charitable work.

e.g. More funds will now be allocated to charitable organizations.

n. charity 赈济金;施舍物；

e.g. Any profit that she makes from her writing goes to charity.\

e.g. Some people are too proud to ask for charity.

补充：proud 自尊心强的

补充：charity begins at home. 行善始于亲友。

e.g. She spends hours and hours on volunteer work and neglects the children, forgetting that charity begins at home.
